Why This Time of Year Can Feel Tough and Why Exercise Makes All the Difference

This time of year really knows how to test our motivation, as the mornings are grey, the evenings are dark, and when the sky opens and the rain starts, staying wrapped up on the sofa with a cuppa feels so much easier than lacing up our trainers. But that’s exactly when movement matters most…
At Forever Health Studios, in Kempston, Bedford, we know it can be tough to get
going when the weather feels cold, wet, and uninspiring, but that’s also when
exercise, fresh air, and daylight can make some of the biggest differences to how
you feel.
More Daylight, More Energy
Even a short walk outside exposes your body to natural daylight, which helps
regulate your body clock and mood. On dull days, that little bit of sunshine - even
through clouds - signals to your brain that it’s awake time, which all helps improve
energy, motivation, and even your sleep later.
Exercise Protects Your Bones and Muscles
Staying active isn’t just about weight or energy levels, it’s an investment in your
future:
Strength training builds and preserves muscle mass.
It also helps maintain bone density, which is essential as we age.
That means better balance, better posture, fewer aches and pains and a body
that keeps you doing the things you love well into the future.
Whether you’re 30 or 70, your muscles and bones respond to movement, and they’ll thank you for it.
Build Habits That Last - A Walk a Day Really Helps
There’s a reason we’ve all heard the phrase “a walk a day” - because it works.
Benefits of a Daily Walk:
Boosts your mood (thanks dopamine and endorphins!)
Gets your heart rate up gently.
Helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Connects you with the outdoors (even when it’s chilly!)
Improves circulation and digestion.
Walks don’t need to be long or fast, as the magic is consistency, and once you feel
the difference they make, you’ll start to look forward to them.
Why Strength Training Matters
Whilst walking is brilliant, it is only one piece of the puzzle. Strength training is
essential if you want better posture, more energy throughout the day, greater
independence as you age, stronger bones and joints and the ability to do everyday
tasks more easily.
You don’t have to be a weightlifter, as all we’re talking about is resistance bands,
bodyweight exercise, or using dumb-bells or kettlebells - for targeted, guided
workouts.
However, if you struggle to get motivated or the above seem hard to get your head around, one of the simplest ways to strength train is using EGYM strength equipment which we have at Forever Health Studios. With a swipe of a wristband, it automatically adapts to your personalised programme for you to easily follow a
guided workout.
Whichever option you choose, it will make your muscles work harder and send
powerful signals to your body to grow stronger. And when strength training is paired with regular movement like walking, you get the best of both worlds - cardiovascular health and muscular strength.
Movement is easier with others and showing up is easier when someone else is
counting on you.
That’s why a supportive community makes such a big difference. At Forever Health Studios, we’re more than just workouts - we’re a group of people motivating each other, cheering each other on, celebrating wins (big and small), and turning “I can’t today” into “Let’s do it!”
Whether it’s, a friendly coach, a workout friend or a group session where everyone
sweats and laughs together…you’re more likely to keep going. Because humans
thrive in connection and that’s a huge part of long-term success.
So, this time of year…
When the sky is grey and the sofa is calling - remember this:
A little movement goes a long way.
Fresh air boosts your mood more than you realise.
Strength training protects your future self.
And a supportive community makes all the difference.
You don’t have to be perfect - just show up, and at Forever Health Studios, we’ll
show up with you.
Here’s to feeling stronger, brighter, and more connected - no matter the
weather (and Spring is literally just around the corner!)
